During recent years, The Greater Norfolk Medical Society of South Hampton Roads has partnered with various organizations to produce health forums and fairs centered around topics that promote healthy living for families in our community. The fairs have included workshops, lectures, and screenings related to prostate, blood pressure, cholesterol, HIV/AIDS, and mental health. These events have been in partnership with the Norfolk Public Health Department, Norfolk Community Health Center and most recently, 200+ Men, under the guidance of Dr. Winston Odom, and in collaboration with the Department of Diversity and Inclusion of EVMS.
Passport To Good Health
In 2022, the medical society conducted a year long program focused on improving the health of underserved communities in Suffolk, Va. The society was a recipient a $100,000 grant from Sentara Healthcare. Members of the society developed a year long curriculum aimed at education the participants on various health topics. The impetus was to teach healthy lifestyles to historically underserved populations.
The program’s curriculum included twelve topics with a different topic being covered each month. The goal was to empower the participant by providing knowledge. Once each monthly module was completed the participant would get their “health passport” stamped. Certain parameters were followed on each participant including BMI, Hgb A1c, cholesterol and blood pressures.
The program demonstrated clear improvement in outcomes as the participants gained knowledge.
