Career Day in Hampton

March 21, 2026

The YH Thomas Community Center gym in Hampton was the site of a Health Career Fair on Saturday, March 21, 2026. Members from the medical society participated in this event, hosted by Hampton Roads Committee of 200+ Men and the medical society. The goals. were to “provide a diverse representation of health professions and to educate students of all ages”.

“So You Want To Be A Doctor?”

March 11, 2026

This event was held at Bayside High School in Virginia Beach and sponsored by Kappa League. It focused on mentoring young men who were interested in becoming a doctor. The discussions included pathways to becoming a physician, informing them of mentorships and networking opportunities. The physicians that participated discussed their own personal journeys and gave advice toward becoming physicians.

Speed Interviewing Night

March 4, 2026

As has been a tradition for years now, the SNMA medical students and local physicians participated in an event that provided conversation and mentorship. The “Speed Interviewing Night” was held at the Waitzer Hall on the EVMS Campus. Students were able to meet with local physicians, refine their interviewing skills, and build mentorship relationships outside of the medical school.

End of the Year Mentoring Reception

December 12, 2025

Room 200, Waitzer Hall on the campus of EVMS was the site for this end of the year celebration. There was an Ugly Sweater Contest, games including “Family Feud” and prizes courtesy of DOC.com. The event was to celebrate the holidays and to celebrate the ongoing mentorship between the Greater Norfolk Medical Society of South Hampton Roads and the SNMA Chapter of VHS EVMS.

Award Presentation at the National Medical Association Award Ceremony

The Greater Norfolk Medical Society of South Hampton Roads was named the recipient of the “Small Local Society Award of 2025”. Specific criteria were outlined and met by the society. An integral part of our selection to receive the award was the “Passport to Good Health” program developed and implemented by our society members. This program was made possible by a $100,000 grant from Sentara Health System.

“Speed Interviewing”

April 1, 2025

This activity was hosted by the medical society in collaboration with the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) Chapter at EVMS.

As in the past years, the medical students were able to interact with minority physicians representing multiple specialties. The goals of this event were to help the medical students sharpen their interviewing skills, to connect with the medical professionals that gave constructive feedback, and networking. Both physicians and medical students in attendance were glad the they were able to connect after having to cancel this event twice due to weather. They all had an amazing time sharing stories and learning about each other.

“Family University”

March 29, 2025

Dr. Mark Innis, our current president, represented the medical society at this event, which was held at Booker T. Washington High School. The focus of this event given by the Norfolk Public Schools was to “explore and learn strategies to support your child’s academic success.

Holiday Celebration

December 13, 2024

The holiday celebration was some what different than others. Not only were the medical students and physician mentors present, but also there were representatives for the Old Dominion Medical Society, including Dr. Michelle Whitehurst-Cook and Dr. Alvin Harris.

Local retired physicians including Drs. Tom and Marjorie Scott were also present.
